History
The first European to visit California was Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo. In 1542 he claimed the region for the King of Spain. The bay was named in 1602 by Don Viscaino. Fort Presidio of San Diego was established in 1769 by Gaspar de Portolà. It was the first settlement by Europeans in California. San Diego acquired its name from the combination of two Spanish names, Saint & James; Saint translating to “Sant” and James to “Iago”. San Diego has the distinguished honor of being called the birthplace of California. 17 Museums and Historical Sites are located at Old Town State Park, known as the birthplace of California. The U.S. Army took permanent possession from Mexico in 1846. In 1850 the town was incorporated. The population in 1885 was approximately 40,000. San Diego became the new Pacific Navy Base in 1941 after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. In the 60’s & 70’s San Diego’s downtown commerce declined when people were moving out to the suburbs. Today things are improving and the downtown area is experiencing a revival. The population of San Diego is just over 3.25 million. Next to Los Angeles, San Diego is the most populated county in California. The Counties of San Diego consist of North County West, North County East, North Inland San Diego, North San Diego, East County, Central San Diego and South County. Nicknames for San Diego; America’s finest city, Silicon Beach, City in Motion and Plymouth of the West. Diverse food fare is widely available from Mexican carne asada, tacos, asada fries and ceviche to California style pizza. Fish tacos are a must try! Southeast Asian cuisine is also very popular. Some well-known Restaurants that had their startups in San Diego are Anthony’s Fish Grotto, Souplantation, Pat & Oscar’s, Jack in the Box, Alberto’s and Rubio’s.
